Extractions

Here at Durango Dental, we pride ourselves on providing thorough oral maintenance and services to keep all our patients healthy and well. That’s why we’ll do everything possible to treat and fix your teeth before we take extraction into consideration.

However, extractions are sometimes required whether it be due to a damaged tooth or in cases where there are too many teeth, consequently leading to further complications for the rest of your oral care.

Reasons for Extraction

There are a number of reasons why extractions take place. While we’ll do everything possible to avoid a dental extraction, there are a few necessary reasons that would cause us to move forward with this type of procedure, including:

  • Health concerns

  • Tooth health

  • Gum health

  • Aesthetics

  • Oral crowding

If an oral health concern begins to impact your physical health, or perhaps causes you pain, we’d look to remove the tooth as soon as possible. Other reasons for removing the tooth are due to tooth decay or dental trauma that has caused problems within your teeth or gum area.

Aesthetically, sometimes teeth need to be removed due to lack of space. For example, wisdom teeth that sometimes erupt will need removal to avoid pushing any existing teeth out of alignment.

While tooth extractions might not necessarily be needed from a health concern, it may be a worthwhile option for those who want to improve the look and potentially proper growth of their teeth.

The Process of Getting an Extraction

What can you expect from a dental extraction with Durango Dental? To help demystify the process, here’s everything you can expect when choosing to get a dental extraction.

Firstly, a local anesthetic will be applied to completely numb the area. There’s a fear for many that a tooth removal is a painful experience, however, it’s completely painless when performed by experienced specialists. This anesthetic is administered through injection to the gum near the affected tooth.

We also offer conscious sedation for those who are feeling particularly anxious about the procedure itself. These options can be discussed in person, and we realize that not everyone will be as comfortable visiting the dentist as others.

Whatever your needs are, we make sure to meet them so that this procedure is painless and minimizes the fear that some experience when visiting the dentist.

Do I Need My Tooth Extracted?

Is a tooth extraction needed for yourself? As we’ve already mentioned, every effort is made to ensure that this is one of the last procedures we turn to. However, there are some symptoms to look out for that would indicate you need a tooth extracted, including:

  • Severe tooth pain

  • A presence or history of gum disease

  • Swollen gums around the tooth or teeth

  • Pain that worsens when biting or chewing

  • Stiffness in the jaw or jaw pain in general

If you have any suspicions that you are dealing with these symptoms, then it’s worth giving us a call. At Durango Dental, we can offer you the best oral care advice, and if required, will book you into the clinic for a check-up.

Prevention and Keeping Teeth Healthy

In order to maintain your teeth and prevent the need for tooth extraction, there are some helpful tips to help keep the dentist away. Here are a few preventative measures to keep your teeth and mouth healthy.

Brush and floss twice a day

While brushing will get rid of most of the debris within your mouth, there will be some bits of food stuck in-between your teeth. This can only be reached with floss, as it’s a thin enough material to slide between teeth. So make sure to do so twice daily.

Use a fluoride toothpaste

A fluoride toothpaste is much more effective in keeping your teeth clean, and most importantly, for avoiding tooth decay. Make the switch to fluoride toothpaste if you’ve not already.

Be sure to visit your dentist twice a year

Be sure to visit your dentist twice a year. Even if you’re not due a visit, if you’re experiencing any pain or have any concerns, give Durango Dental a call today.

Bridges and implants will restore function and once again, have you smiling widely.

Regular X-rays

Opt in to regular mouth X-rays at Durango Dental. These can help your dentist identify diseases, injuries, infections, and other developmental issues before they become serious health concerns.
